It's strike two for Iloilo!

by Pepin

Recognized by the the Department of Health as having the "Best Anti-smoking Initiative" among local government units, Iloilo City will be awarded with its second Red Orchid Award on June 13, 2013.

This recognition shows that the local government  has been successful in implementing measures to reduce smoking in public areas and to promote public health and wellness.

One of the notable measures is by declaring the city hall a smoke-free zone. The city government also established stronger partnerships with various private enterprises, schools, and non-government organizations to develop a smoke free community.

In order to be a recipient of the Red Orchid Awards, the local government unit must prescribe the six WHO’s MPOWER initiatives:

1. Monitor tobacco control policies
2. Protect people from tobacco smoke
3. Offer help to quit tobacco use
4. Warn against the dangers of tobacco
5. Enforce bans on tobacco advertising
6. and Raise taxes on tobacco.

Congratulations to Iloilo City!
