Ibos, is a popular kakanin in the provinces of Iloilo and Antique. It is made of steamed sticky (gulatinous) rice and wrapped on a palm leaf. It taste bland, but you can enhance its flavour by adding muscovado sugar. You can also fry it or dip it on a cup of hot native chocolate. It also goes well with the sweet taste of ripe mango.

Daisy Avellana: Capiz’ pride
and Philippines’ treasure

by Pepin

Modern Philippine theater wouldn’t have reached a prominent status if not through the efforts of one of its pioneers, Daisy Hontiveros Avellana, a renowned National Artist from the province of Capiz.

Avellana spent most of her career on stage, taking on heavy roles and playing as a leading lady to her real-life partner, Lamberto Avellana, a National Artist as well.

But it is not only her acting prowess that brought her fame. She is also a brilliant film writer and director. Her masterpiece, “Sakay” in 1939, was hailed as one of the most exceptional Filipino films of all time.  Her other noteworthy works include scripts for the movies “Badjao” and “Anak Dalita”.

In 2006 at the age of 88, Avellana produced another masterpiece, “The Vigil”, a dramatic reading of a play by Ladislas Fodor . This production was made possible through the Barangay Theater Guild (BTG) that she and her friends have founded way back in 1939. This was her last work.

Avellana died on May 12, 2013 at the age of 96. She will be remembered as the Philippine’s First Lady of Theater. Her works and her life remain as an inspiration, not only to the people inside the theater and film industry, but also to all the Filipinos.

Guimarasnons working well on
Environmental Preservation

Another remarkable thing about the small island of Guimaras is the collective effort of its people to safeguard the natural resources.

The province has been home to various sanctuaries, such as marine turtles, several species of crustaceans, aquatic plants, and mangroves. There are also protected areas for different species of birds, bats, and mammals that inhabit the wetlands and mountains.

Biologist, environmentalists, and other life science experts have also been conducting their research studies in the province. Results of their investigations have been valuable tools to improve the ecological conditions.

But the most noteworthy part are the people of Guimaras, who have been very participative in the quest to preserve nature. They act as environmental promoters and sentinels, who protect the welfare of the flora and fauna that are thriving in the province.

Back in 2006, Guimarasnon unite to clean up the oil spill mess at the shores of Nueva Valencia. And after almost seven years, they have become vigilant in protecting the environment.

As long as they continue to share their efforts in this endeavor, the province will be one of the last places that we can experience the true beauty of nature.

It's strike two for Iloilo!

by Pepin

Recognized by the the Department of Health as having the "Best Anti-smoking Initiative" among local government units, Iloilo City will be awarded with its second Red Orchid Award on June 13, 2013.

This recognition shows that the local government  has been successful in implementing measures to reduce smoking in public areas and to promote public health and wellness.

One of the notable measures is by declaring the city hall a smoke-free zone. The city government also established stronger partnerships with various private enterprises, schools, and non-government organizations to develop a smoke free community.

In order to be a recipient of the Red Orchid Awards, the local government unit must prescribe the six WHO’s MPOWER initiatives:

1. Monitor tobacco control policies
2. Protect people from tobacco smoke
3. Offer help to quit tobacco use
4. Warn against the dangers of tobacco
5. Enforce bans on tobacco advertising
6. and Raise taxes on tobacco.

Congratulations to Iloilo City!

Saving the Visayan Spotted Deer

by Pepin

Within the past ten years, there is a significant drop in the population of the Visayan Spotted Deer, a rare species of Rusa alfredi that can only be found in rainforests of Panay and Negros regions. A great number of these nocturnal mammals could have been preserved if people have done their part to protect them.

But because of a number of illegal logging businesses, hunting, and other activities that cause ecological destruction around the mountainous regions of Antique, these vulnerable creatures will soon be wiped out, especially that the current record shows that only less than five hundred of them are existing.

The government should be firm in implementing conservation measures for these creatures, as well as penalize those who do not adhere to environmental policies.

The Visayan Spotted Deer is a pride of our region. We need to do something before they will totally perish.
