Dinagyang title stays with
Tribu Pan-ay

By Pepin

In this year’s rigid competition, Tribu Pan-ay of Fort San Pedro National High School, managed to add another “Dinagyang Champion” title under their name for the second time in a row. They beat twelve other competing tribes that also showcased stunning performances yesterday in the Ati-ati tribe competition.

The tribe also won several special awards including Best in Performance and Best in Choreography. Tribu Lunok of Iloilo City National High School came in second place and Tribu Ilonganon in third.

Tribu Pan-ay will represent Iloilo City and the Dinagyang Festival in the Aliwan Fiesta this coming April at Metro Manila. Last year, they emerged as the grand champions in the said competition, beating other festivals from other parts of the country. Dinagyang Festival was also named as the “Queen Festival of the Philippines” in 2011 by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP).

Hail to the new queen of Dinagyang

 By Pepin

Charmaine Grace Deatras was crowned Miss Dinagyang 2012 during a spectacular event held at the gymnasium of Central Philippine University last January 18. With her charm and wit, she bested other beautiful ladies representing different schools and universities of Iloilo. Angeli Orada and Karla Dawn Yaneza were named as the first and second runners up respectively.

After an uplifting remark by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, the candidates were judged in different categories, including swimsuit presentation, evening wear, casual wear, and the nerve-wracking final interview. Deatras presented herself in all rounds of the pageant and gave a remarkable answer on the question “What makes Iloilo City’s Dinagyang Festival the Best Tourism Event of the Philippines?”

The coronation night was graced by four former beauty queens who represented and brought honor to the country. They were Shamcey Supsup (Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner Up), Gloria Diaz (Miss Universe 1969 winner), Evengeline Pascual (Miss World 1973 1st Runner up), and Ma. Isabel Lopez (Miss Philippines Universe 1982). They were all part of the judging panel.

The audience also enjoyed several performances rendered by selected Dinagyang Ati-ati tribes and local artists. One of the breathtaking numbers of the night was rendered by the acrobatics group, Synergy, finalist of Pilipinas Got Talent Show of ABS-CBN.

The pageant was organized by the city government in cooperation with Iloilo’s master of fashion, Alex Soncio.
