Saving the Visayan
Spotted Deer
by Pepin
Within the past ten years, there is a significant drop in
the population of the Visayan Spotted Deer, a rare species of Rusa alfredi that
can only be found in rainforests of Panay and Negros regions. A great number of
these nocturnal mammals could have been preserved if people have done their
part to protect them.

But because of a number of illegal logging businesses,
hunting, and other activities that cause ecological destruction around the
mountainous regions of Antique, these vulnerable creatures will soon be wiped
out, especially that the current record shows that only less than five hundred
of them are existing.
The government should be firm in implementing conservation
measures for these creatures, as well as penalize those who do not adhere to
environmental policies.
The Visayan Spotted Deer is a
pride of our region. We need to do something before they will totally perish.
