The Great Summer Escape 6:

Basangbasa Coral Beach Resort
San Joaquin, Iloilo

By Pepin

The glamorous you won’t find here, but the true “serene run off” in this once a simple beach lot will definitely complete your day. Basangbasa Coral Beach Resort is an hour and a half away from the city of Iloilo and it can be reached via bus, passenger jeepney or rented van. This place spells “exceptional” in any way you like it.

Located at the end part of the Municipality of San Joaquin, Iloilo, this spot welcomes every visitor into the sublimity of beach living. The cottages are arranged in such a way that you will be able to feel the beach breeze anywhere you stand. It’s a “user-friendly” beach resort, as many  say, because of the well-planned and well-maintained amenities.

But this summer escape flaunts more its beach because of the treasures hidden underwater that are only revealed when the tide sets low. Corals of different hues and fishes of various sizes present themselves to you even as you stand in any of the big rocks at the middle of the waters, but the local government prohibited fishing in this area to preserve marine life. However, you can feed the fishes with bread crumbs, or better yet, go snorkeling.

Room rates:

Beach Front Cottages with toilet and bath
Aircon – Php 2000.00
Non-aircon – Php 1500.00

Hilltop Cottages with toilet and bath
Aircon – Php 1500.00
Non-aircon – Php 1000.00

Picnic Sheds – Php 200.00

Ilonggos Run For A Cause

By Pepin
Hundred of Ilonggos flocked at Freedom Grandstand to take part in the first ever Fun Run and Walk by the Gawad Kalinga (GK) Iloilo last July 11, 2010. The eight-kilometer trail concluded at Boardwalk, where more activities and surprises awaited the participants.

With a theme of “Step up and get movin’,” this activity aimed to promote social awareness and gave opportunities for Ilonggos to share little of what they have to help build homes for dispossessed families in the region. For many years now, it has always been the vision of Gawad Kalinga to stir Filipinos’ hearts to help each other, and this year’s fun run and walk was successful to amass Ilonggos’ support for its cause.

Present at the activity were the newly-elected local officials, who led the people’s confirmation of support for Gawad Kalinga. There are individual runners of various ages and sizes, and there are also groups of friends, families, and colleagues at work who ran together as one.

At the Boardwalk, participants enjoyed different kinds of refreshments provided by some sponsors of the event, and they stretched and bended more during the aero-taebo exercise. There is also a raffle draw and an awarding of prizes for those who finished the race first, both in individual and group categories.
At the end of the race, it did not matter who won, but the victory of the activity as a whole and the fulfilment of every participant to jumpstart the dream of GK in the region.

GK is looking forward to hold the same activity in 2011 after hundreds of people responded this year. t the same time, Ilonggos are expecting to become a part of another round of this activity, and they are hoping for greater success of the cause of this organization.

The heart-warming stare
of a fallow deer

by Pepin

When you see them running in the wild, you can feel your heart’s pace slowly waning and your thoughts lingering on the beauty that these creatures bring.

Standing with grace, the fallow deer is a perfect reminder for all of us that nature is beautiful in every aspect, even beyond on what we think that charm and elegance can only be achieved with jewelries and fancy clothes.

Because of its pale coat and meek stare, this heart-warming mammal gleam with modesty and minimalism – the two important qualities that Mother Nature demands from us. “Modesty” because we have so much to boasts, such as the colorful flowers, the beautiful reefs, and the picturesque landscapes. There is no reason for us to crave with greed over money and material possessions. “Minimalism” because in the eyes of the natural world everything is simple; there is no need for us to complicate our daily tasks.

For a majority, these creatures are not the best looking mammal in the land, but they can definitely capture your sentiments like never before.

SIX Men’s Tools For
A Refreshing Break
Guys, get ready to spoil yourselves!

By Pepin
A six-hour bus ride from Iloilo City to Boracay is very much demanding, and if you are a guy, this means a lot of sweating. You just don’t wipe your perspiration off with a piece of face towel. If you want to look fresh and hearty, you need to do something to fix that cute manly look.

However, you should remember that a man’s needs are different from that of a woman, and that includes the stuff that you should bring when travelling. So forget about the lipstick, the face powder, and the eyeliner, because you will not be needing those to refresh your self.

Here are the six stuffs guys like you should include in your luggage, and these will serve as your weapons to rejuvenate your bushed self.

Deodorant. It is in the nature of men to perspire a lot. And after that watery feeling comes an awful smell of body odor. You are lucky if you can stay dry for six hours, but even though you could, you still need to roll a deo on your underarms to keep the rate of sweat down and stay sweet-scented for awhile. Speed Stick Deodorant might work the trick for you if you want to stay dry all day long and experience a clean masculine scent.

Perfume. Those Eau De Toilette are great cover ups for powerful body odors, and they can set a lively mood for any conversation, especially if you will be talking with a group of ladies out in the beach. A lot of guys do not know how to choose the right scent for the right time and place, and they end up smelling incongruously. So when you are in Boracay or in Nogas Island, always pick something that coincides with the freshness of the sea breeze. The overwhelming aroma of Adidas’ Game Spirit is a perfect choice if you are off for a challenging game of Frisbee on the beach.

Lotion. The skin is a protective layer of your internal organs, but you should also learn how to protect your skin. It is understood that you should apply some sun block if you are out there trekking the mountains of antique under the blazing heat of the sun. But if you are just having long hours of bus ride, or eating out in some of the finest restaurants in Roxas, it is best that you should apply body lotion to moisturize your skin and keep it healthy at all times. One of the best pick is Nivea For Men Whitening Body Lotion for cell repair and skin protection.

Supplements. Aside from nourishing your skin, you should also nurture your self from within. And one of the best ways to do so is by taking some food supplements, especially to control the normal processes of your organ-system. Fish oil, for example, helps support healthy heart, and maintains brain and joint function. It contains Omega-3 fatty acids that can do so much wonder for the heart and blood vessels, and it lowers down cholesterol levels in the blood. You need this, especially if you will be ingesting a lot of aligi rice, lechon kawali, or kansi. One soft gel capsule of Kirkland Signature Enteric Coated Omega-3 Fish Oil per day can already mean so much for your health and wellness.

Lib Balm. Dry lips are common during hot seasons, or when a person is getting dehydrated. It can bother any woman, but not usually guys. But if you are a man who knows that choppy and cracking lips looks odd on your face, you will be applying lip balm over it to relieve the condition. ChapStick Lip Balm With Sunscreen SPF 4 works best for a guy’s lips, and it looks manly enough to bring on vacation.

Shampoo. After the wearing tour or bus ride, the best thing to do next is to take a bath. It is an extremely energizing moment for any man to cool off in the shower after dust and dirt gummed on their body. The part that man loves to wash in the shower is the hair because it is like everything polluted is in there. Clear Men has an invigorating scent and it literally cools your scalp with its powerful blend of cooling sensation.

Being a man is also demanding, and if you want to look your best, you need to pamper yourself well. This doesn’t mean that you are going girly, but being at your best form can help you stay physically, mentally, and socially healthy at all times.

Water Shortage:
How does it affect you?

by Pepin

For the next three months, Filipinos will be enduring water shortage. But how could it happen? How come that an abundant natural resource will be scarce? The reason for this is quite simple; our planet is still aching with the effects of global warming.

If we feel thirsty and our heads are shaking with displease, so is our lands and the millions of creatures that are now dying from the tremendous upshot of global warming. Water is a vital element, not only for you, but for every single living organism on the planet. If it will become inadequate, then all life forms will suffer.

Do we still have time to stop water from getting sparse? For the next three months, I don’t believe there is something we can do to end the crisis. The problem is already here and we must face it by all means. But we can do something to prevent it from getting worst and save our destiny in the succeeding years. Reversing global warming is a long shot, but we can decelerate its consequences right now by putting a stop to our habits that causes such life-threatening problem.

One of the best solutions is to avoid pollution – whether on land, air, or water. It is one of the culprits that contributed for the intense heating of the earth. If we can reduce the emission of green house gases, dispose our trash properly and wisely, and steer clear of using poisonous chemicals on soils and seas, we can impede the problem from getting worst, and there will be hope for all of us.

Just A Breadwinner
Take a bite of some of Panay’s kneaded delights

By Pepin
Going on tour around Panay will definitely whack you out. Aside from a superb lunch, a tasty snack will keep you going throughout the day. So what can your stomach expect from this part of the globe? Well, get ready to meet some of the luscious treats that are truly Panay-baked.

ENSAYMADA BALLS (Angelina Bakeshop; Php 11.75/piece)

Sift some flour and sprinkle some sugar and grated cheese, and you will get a mouth-watering Ensaymada. This treat melts in your mouth with a different flavor twist and your every bite will surely be unforgettable. Moreover, this is a perfect pasalubong (gift) for your love ones and they will surely miss its taste.

TOASTED ROUND CAKE (Deocampo’s Original Barquillos; Php 9.25/pack of 5)

Truly an Ilonggo masterpiece, this delight is a lot crunchier than you expect. Every piece is loaded with fresh butter and cream milk, and it is oven-fresh. This is a perfect tour partner, especially if you will be travelling from Iloilo City to Boracay for long hours.

BANANA CUP CAKE (Arlene’s Homemade Cake at Bolilao, Mandurriao Iloilo City; Php 15.00/pack of 3)

Banana cakes are scattered all over the Philippines, and the people of Panay are never too late to make their own recipe for this famous treat. What is good to have this as part of your snack is it can easily make you feel full. In addition, this treat is oozing with nutrients that you can often get from a piece of banana.

HOPIA BABOY (JD Bakeshop; Php 17.75/pack of 5)

Panayanons have their own version of Hopia, and surprisingly it can be at par with the bests in the land. What makes Panay-made Hopia a lot more exciting is that it contains more stuffing, and every piece complements well a delicious cup of coffee or hot choco.

FIG BREAD (Sari-sari Breadstore; Php 3.00/piece)

Sari-sari Breadstore existed for quite some time and it has several branches in some parts of the Province of Iloilo. Aside from its well-known Pandesal, presently there are a lot of delights that entice crabby bellies. One of which is the Fig Bread that boast a rich blend of tang in its filling. This may be a perfect substitute for Hopia, but then again, this has its own unique taste.

UBE MACAPUNO BIBINGKA (Tibiao Bakery; Php 13.75/piece)

You can have a cheap but lavish treat when you visit Antique or Iloilo. Ube Macapuno Bibingka is an upgraded version of the famous Filipino delicacy made from sweet rice flour (pilit) and coconut milk (gata). The traditional bibingka recipe involves pouring the mixture in banana leaves that are shaped like mini baking cups, and cooking it inside a customized oven, which is heated by firewood. The different varieties of bibingka all over Capiz, Iloilo, Antique, and Aklan only show that Panayanons are connoisseurs when it comes to exploring a different bend of taste of traditional Filipino cooking.

UGOY-UGOY (Tinapayan; Php 20.00/pack)

Ordinary days at home are often made pleasurable with this simple but yummy treat that is proudly Ilonggo. The crunchy and sweet taste of ugoy-ugoy makes it an unstoppable snack. That is, you can never get enough unless you finish a pack. But the best thing about this Ilonggo titbit is that it can also consummate as a dessert of a heavy dinner.

PUTO CHEESE (Laynie Manna Enterprise, Jaro Iloilo City; Php 28.00/pack of 15)

You will be tempted by the puto cheese’s amusing colors, but once you take a bite, you will surely have more. In Iloilo, this already makes a perfect snack during small gatherings, like organizational assemblies, group works, and even during all-night wake vigils. It is thrilling to eat because of its soft texture, and it is often regarded as a “practical snack”.

It is amazing to note that there are a lot of treats you can find in Panay Island, and this list can reach more than a thousand. And with all of these delectable food stuffs you can have, this assures you that you will never starve once you are here for a tour or for good.
